I have loved everything David Leavitt has written and eagerly awaited what sounded like a fun premise. Unfortunately, the most fun was in the premise. The reviews that say it is 'laugh out loud funny' must have extra pages in their copy that are missing from mine. There are some clever lines but I did not find any of the characters to be really engaging (especially the main characters, Eva and Bruce).In every one of his books (and I recommend them all), there were always passages/turns of phrase/dialogue that were so elegant and lyrical that I would reread them just for the repeated enjoyment of his prose. I did not find it here.I remain a David Leavitt fan and will always buy his books. If you are new to him, I would encourage to check out some of his other books as well This is a New York book, set in and around Manhattan, and it is populated by that particular breed of upper middle-class New Yorker who lives on the Upper West Side and is just so.......well, upper. Everyone is smart, almost everyone is well educated, and most folks have issues - or they wouldn't be characters in a novel. This work goes down easy, and its a great distraction from the horror that is America in October, 2020 when I read it.
